Who do you think you are? And what you do you think people think about you? And what you exactly want to be? Getting answers to these questions will help you design appropriate communication strategies that will support your career pursuits. So what personality-type do you demonstrate? The Myers-Briggs theory developed by mother-daughter duo during the 1960s can throw some light onto it.

The framework they developed was based on the model suggested by psychologist Carl Jung. According to the theory, people can be categorized under four dimensions:

  • Thinking vs. Feeling
  • Sensing vs. Intuition
  • Introversion vs. Extraversion
  • Judging vs. Perceiving

The theorists proposed that our preferences on each of the four dimensions would act together, creating predictable patterns in how we think and behave. This boils down to the fact that people having similar preferences will demonstrate certain common behaviours that they would apply in their lives.

What are the four dimensions of personality type?

Myers and Briggs suggest that these patterns describe how people focus their energy, process information, make decisions, and lead their lives.

Introversion vs. Extraversion

Introverts are normally quiet people who choose to spend time alone or in their small, closed group. They get the maximum energy when they are allowed to remain in their own sphere. Extroverts feel good when they spend time with people in active settings.

Sensing vs. Intuition

This quality describes an individual’s information processing ability.

Sensors are those individuals who take more interest in matters that they can see, hear, and feel. They are practical in approaches towards their lives. Intuitives are creative people who rely on theories, patterns, and explanations for decision-making.

Thinking vs. Feeling

This dimension explains people’s decision-making patterns. The Thinkers rely on logic and reason to make decision while the Feelers think from their hearts when they make decisions. They take in account how a decision will affect people and if the decision suits their values.

Judging vs. Perceiving

This dimension judges how people view structure. The Judgers are the ones who plan things out and carry out work as per structure and order. The perceivers adopt a flexible approach towards life and prefer spontaneity over planned actions.

Based on this theory, 16 personality types can be derived based on the above-discussed combination. So what personality-type are you? We would like to know.
